The Scent of Green Papaya (Vietnamese: Mùi đu đủ xanh, French: L'Odeur de la papaye verte) is a 1993 Vietnamese-language film produced in France by Lazennec Production, directed by Vietnamese-French director Tran Anh Hung, and starring Tran Nu Yên-Khê, Man San Lu, and Thi Loc Truong.  The film won the Caméra d'Or prize at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival, a César Award for Best Debut at the French annual film award ceremony, and was nominated for the 1993 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The Scent of Green Papaya is Tran Anh Hung's first feature film and stars his wife, Tran Nu Yên-Khê. The film is also the director's first collaboration with Vietnamese composer Tôn-Thât Tiêt who would subsequently write the music for two more films: Cyclo and Vertical Ray of the Sun.  Although set in Vietnam, the film was shot entirely on a soundstage in Boulogne, France.

Mùi Đu Đủ Xanh là một bộ phim nói tiếng Việt được sản xuất năm 1983 tại Pháp bởi hãng Lazennec Production, được đạo diễn bởi đạo diễn người Pháp gốc Việt Trần Anh Hùng, và đóng vai chính là Trần Nữ Yên Khê, Lư Mẫn San, Trương Thị Lộc...  Bộ phim đoạt được giải Camera Vàng tai Liên Hoan Phim Cannes năm 1993, và được đề cử cho giải phim nước ngoài hay nhất ở Giải Thưởng Oscar 1993.  Mùi Đu Đủ Xanh là phim truyện đầu tiên của Trần Anh Hùng và đóng vai chính là vợ của anh ta, Trần Nữ Yên Khê.  Bộ phim này cũng là sự hợp tác đầu tiên giữa đạo diễn với nhà soạn nhạc người Việt Tôn Thất Tiết, người mà sau đó viết nhạc cho thêm hai bộ phim nữa:  Xích Lô và Mùa Hè Chiều Thẳng Đứng.  Mặc dù bối cảnh là ở Việt Nam, bộ phim được quay hoàn toàn trong trường quay ở thành phố Boulogne của Pháp.  

Plot summary

A young girl, Mùi, becomes a servant for a rich family. Mùi is notably peaceful and curious about the world. The family consists of a frequently absent husband, a wife, an older son, two younger sons, and the husband's mother. When the husband leaves for his fourth and final time, he takes all the household's money. He returns ill and passes away shortly after.

Ten years later, the family falls on hard times. Two sons have left and the wife has taken the place of the grandmother upstairs, rarely seen and tragic. Although the wife now realizes she considered Mùi one of her own, Mùi changes homes. She becomes a servant for a pianist who was a friend of the older son when they were younger. That man is engaged to be married, but he prefers playing the piano to spending time with his fiance. 

One night, as the man's fiance chatters on, his piano playing becomes more and more stormy as he ignores her. When she leaves she watches through the window. As Mùi comes into the room, his music becomes more harmonious. Later that night, the pianist goes to Mùi's quarters after dark and closes the door behind him. When the fiance learns of this, the engagement is broken. The pianist starts teaching Mùi to read and write as well as comport herself as a lady. A pregnant Mùi reads poetry to her husband, her unborn child, and the wife of her original household.

Mùi đu đủ xanh (tiếng Pháp: L'Odeur de la papaye verte) là một phim nói tiếng Việt nổi tiếng của đạo diễn người Pháp gốc Việt Trần Anh Hùng. Được trình chiếu tại Liên hoan phim Cannes tháng 5 năm 1993, Mùi đu đủ xanh đã giành được giải Camera vàng cho phim đầu tay. Năm 1994, Mùi đu đủ xanh được đề cử giải Oscar cho phim ngoại ngữ hay nhất nhưng không đoạt giải.

Nội dung


Bộ phim nói về Mùi, một cô bé đi ở cho một gia đình buôn vải ở Sài Gòn khoảng những năm 1950. Trong gia đình này, người vợ là trụ cột chính, gánh vác công việc, còn ông chồng chỉ biết chơi bời. Ông bà chủ có 3 con trai, một người trưởng thành, tên là Trung. Hai con trai còn lại, một đang tuổi vị thành niên ít quan tâm tới Mùi. Đứa thứ hai khoảng tuổi Mùi thường xuyên trêu chọc cô. Khoảng 10 năm sau, Mùi đã lớn trở thành một thiếu nữ. Mùi rời nhà bà chủ đến giúp việc cho Khuyến - bạn của cậu Trung. Khuyến là một nghệ sĩ dương cầm và cũng là người mà Mùi có những cảm xúc đầu tiên lúc còn nhỏ. Ở nhà Khuyến, Mùi đã tìm được tình yêu và trở thành vợ của Khuyến.

Tuy bối cảnh là Sài Gòn thập niên 1950, nhưng Mùi đu đủ xanh được quay tại Paris, trường quay Bry - số 2 đại lộ Europe, Bry-sur-Marne, Val-de-Marne. Man San Lu vai Mùi khi nhỏ là người Pháp gốc Á. Nữ diễn viên Trần Nữ Yên Khê, vai Mùi lúc lớn, là một người Pháp gốc Việt, phát âm tiếng Việt không chuẩn. Cô là vợ của Trần Anh Hùng và tiếp tục tham gia diễn xuất trong hai bộ phim sau của đạo diễn này là Xích lô và Mùa hè chiều thẳng đứng.
