Synopsis

Olivier and James’ romantic break in the South of France is interrupted by the sudden arrival of Caroline. Everything seems calm as they bask in their idyllic settings, though Olivier finds himself more and more intrigued by the young woman.  Slowly tensions of sexual jealousy and possessiveness start to simmer under the Provencal sun.

About

Produced by Blue Shadows Films, Wasp is the debut feature film from writer-director Philippe Audi-Dor, starring Simon Haycock, Elly Condron and Hugo Bolton.  Shot in the south of France, the film is currently touring festivals world-wide, where it recently won Best International Feature and Best Actress at Film Out San Diego.

 Hugo Bolton

“Wasp” marks Hugo Bolton’s debut feature film after training at Drama Centre. He has appeared in various theatre productions, including ‘Billy Budd’ at the Southwark Playhouse. He also recently completed a short film, “The Swimming Pool Library”, inspired by the Alan Hollinghurst book of the same name.

 Simon Haycock

Born in Yorkshire, dedicated British actor Simon Haycock trained at the renowned Drama Centre in London. An  informed actor,  Simon  originally studied Chemistry at Imperial College before embarking on a successful career in business. “Wasp” is his first feature film.

Elly Condron

Elly Condron graduated from Drama Centre in 2013 and has since been working on various film and theatre roles. This summer will see her playing the romantic lead in a Northern Irish play at the Finborough theatre and Lady Macbeth in R-ft’s ambitious, overnight production of the Scottish Play.

“Wasp proves Philippe Audi-Dor is a new and promising film talent”

Eric Le Duc // De Telegraaf

“The 26-year-old writer-director has the audacity to explore the fluidity and complexity of sexuality in a (politically incorrect) manner rarely seen onscreen, beginning a new and exciting dialogue in the process”

Frank J. Avella // Edge Media Network

“Writer-director Philippe Audi-Dor offers a new voice in cinema whether it be visually, sound or through story telling. This one is semi-autobiographical, the director’s debut, it’s magnificent with stunning attention to detail and mastery of the art of cinema. And a film where everyone deserves credit including Editor Alexis Steele with crisp cuts and Director of Photography Pablo Rojo who brings to life juicy limes that sting the eye”

“Proving that indie cinema can be as winning as main stream releases.”
Shinesquad

“We are extremely proud to be introducing Swiss Director Philippe Audi-Dor to the U.S. with his magnificent debut feature“

Richard Ross, Breaking Glass Pictures co-President, as quoted in Indie Wire
“Writer-director Philippe Audi-Dor’s film “Wasp” is an itchy, anxiety-inducing three-hander full of crackling performances, desire and apprehension”

“A film that could easily have become trite and tedious ratchets up the tension instead, thanks in part to Pablo Rojo’s cinematography and Alexis Steele’s edgy editing. The script is smart, too, never telling us everything we want to know. Instead, we are left to speculate, project, and decide for ourselves, and, like a horror movie, the products of our own imaginations fill in the gaps with personal fears. That, plus the operatic score and intimate setting, give the movie intimacy and immediacy.”

“The film glories in expertly done long takes, such as an agonizing ride in the car when Olivier and Caroline find themselves alone, stewing in desire and apprehension.”

Kilian Melloy / Edge Media Network

“The way the story unfolds is really intriguing and we commend Audi-Dor for doing something different and unexpected. The tension that builds between Olivier and Caroline does so expertly and at a believable pace.”

“Audi-Dor, who wrote the movie and directed it, also deserves special comment for what he’s achieved. The film doesn’t feel low budget and the cinematography captures the stunning location really well. It’s not easy to make a film with only three actors compelling and whilst this could work well as a play, Audi-Dor’s direction makes it an intriguing character study and he gets superb performances from his actors.”

“Audi-Dor has assembled a stellar cast for the movie with all of the leads equal to one another in terms of their performance”

“We’ll be keeping an eye on Audi-Dor to see what he does next and we’ll also be closely watching the careers of Simon Haycock, Hugo Bolton and Elly Condron”

Pip Ellwood // Entertainment Focus

“It’s one of those ones that creates a buzz about it, imploring you to talk about all the emotions you felt and the juiciness of the drama. It’s brave and clever, and doesn’t try to be Hollywood.”

“Olivier and James’ romantic break in the South of France is interrupted by the sudden arrival of Caroline. Friendships are questioned; sexuality tested.” Wasp is the debut feature from writer/ director Philippe Audi-Dor. Set in the South of France, the film is available in the US on DVD and VOD and will be released in September 2015 in the UK.

We shot this film in September 2013 on location at Philipe’s family home in Gordes, Provence in France. The location was stunning and we had an incredible time making the film. This was my first feature film and my first project after graduating from Drama Centre, and I had been acting full time for just over 18 months at this point. I learnt a huge amount working on it – both as an actor and as in individual. Being straight and playing a character who identifies as gay was a challenge but I tried to draw from my own life to identify with the experience that Olivier goes through in the film.

Press and Reviews:

I was very fortunate to be interviewed by Entertainment Focus about playing the role of Olivier in Wasp – you can read the interview here.

Philippe Audi-Dor, writer/director of Wasp, gave a great interview with Edge Media Network and you can read that here – “All three actors deliver superb performances but Haycock is most affecting as Olivier. And while the part is well written (“Olivier is by far the one I identify the most with, so writing him wasn’t too difficult,” says Audi-Dor), Haycock brings unexpected nuance to the enigmatic turn. “Though Simon never experienced what his character goes through, he managed to draw parallels from past experiences, which helped him a lot,” the director states. “We also talked at length about the character and my own experiences as a young man somewhere between being gay and straight. At the end of the day, regardless of sexual orientation his character is simply someone who goes through an identity crisis that affects his relationship. That is something many of us have been through, and makes the character easily relatable.”

Edge Media Network (USA)- “Haycock and Condron deliver crackling performances; Bolton’s role is less juicily written, but when his character is allowed to let loose, it’s hair-raising.”

Telegraaf (Netherlands) – “With a talented cast, a minimal budget and his own house twist as location, Swiss filmmaker serves an interesting story in the gay & amp; lesbian-film genre.“ – the link is via Google Translate to translate from Dutch into English.

Entertainment Focus (UK)- “Audi-Dor has assembled a stellar cast for the movie with all of the leads equal to one another in terms of their performance. Simon Haycock does a great job of conveying Olivier’s conflict through his emotive performance and he has superb chemistry with both Hugo Bolton and Elly Condron. Bolton makes what could have been a fairly flighty role rather meaty and Condron has great fun playing the devilishly manipulative Caroline. The trio works really well together and they really excel in the scenes where the tension threatens to boil over.”

Shine Squad (UK) – “This is a break out movie for all involved – with delicious performances, by turns funny, poignant and destructive from the cast of three – Hugo Bolton (James), Elly Condron (Caroline) and Simon Haycock (Olivier).”

About Simon

I am a professional actor trained at Drama Centre, with excellent martial arts, combat and rock climbing skills. My most notable credits include the lead in Wasp – a feature shot in Provence, France. Critics have spoken highly of my portrayal of Olivier in Wasp: “an actor that is definitely on the rise and one you should keep an eye out for in 2015” – Entertainment Focus.

I am currently in the middle of shooting the epic sci-fi feature Kaleidoscope Man (starring opposite 80’s pop star, Toyah Willcox). Shooting is taking place in the Canary Islands and UK during Summer and Autumn 2015.

Alongside acting, I work regularly as a voiceover artist and can currently be heard as the voice of Rolex for a number of their global campaigns. I can also currently be heard on Classic FM voicing a commercial for a well known mobile phone company.

I haven’t always been an actor. After my A levels, I did a Chemistry degree at Imperial College and like many of my uni mates I went into a graduate scheme for a business consultancy firm. I was lucky to travel all over the world with various jobs but before I knew it, 9 years had gone by and I had been working in office jobs for nearly all of my adult life. I have always been a creative person, passionate about film and music. But in 2011, I was starting to realise that the career I had pursued wasn’t right for me. I didn’t have the creativity and freedom I needed in my life and felt chained to a career I had never really actively pursued. It was only when I tried acting for the first time on a friend’s short film that I felt like I had found something that really drove me to change my life. Evening courses in acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama (among others) followed, and within a year I realised that I needed to quit my job in order to pursue acting full time. I was lucky to gain a place to study acting at Drama Centre London starting January 2012. I sold my home to finance the course, and quit the job I no longer wanted. The rest, as they say is history.

Wasp Wins at FilmOut San Diego Festival!
JUNE 5, 2015

I am absolutely delighted to announce Wasp had won both BEST INTERNATIONAL FEATURE and BEST ACTRESS IN A FEATURE at the 2015 FilmOut San Diego Festival!!

Words just aren’t enough to express my joy – this comes as a complete surprise, and I cannot thank the jury and Festival enough for these awards. This means the world to me, and I will forever be thankful.

Elly Condron is an incredibly talented actress whose understanding of complex emotional subtleties make her a joy to work with (That, and her inexhaustible sense of humour). Not only is she fascinating to watch on screen, she is also the kind of actress who understands how her portrayal of a character will affect the overall storyline – and for a director, that’s gold. I without a shadow of a doubt know there are many more awards coming her way!

As for the Best International Feature, it’s quite simply the best of honours as it rewards the work of every single person involved in the making of the film!

Congratulation to all the other winners whose films I am impatient to discover! Check them out by clicking right here – they include James Franco, Emma Roberts, Zachary Quinto and more.

My reaction to the announcement – in case anyone was wondering – was to break out in unstoppable laughter and jump all around my bedroom. I had just spent the day with the cast filming interviews for the film, hence the news come while I was in complete ‘Wasp’ mood – perfect timing!

I hope I’ll soon be bringing more similar news in future posts! In the meantime, have a great day, and once again thank you FilmOut San Diego!

Philippe
